2002 Black Tip Kite

2002 Co2 Kite

2002 C111 Kite

Introducing the 2002 line of awesome new kites from Cabrinha…. this incredible new range offers the following improvements:

NEW: AIRLOCK ONE WAY VALVE - The Airlock high volume one way valve is a Cabrinha exclusive. While inflating, the one way valve does not allow air to escape. Even when the pump nozzle is pulled out. The extra large opening allows for even the largest kites to be pumped up in minutes. By unscrewing the deflation cap the kite will deflate and be ready to be rolled up in seconds. The Airlock valve is secured to the leading edge with an "O" ring so the bladder is not able to spin inside of its casing. The threaded valve cap makes it virtually impossible for the accidental opening of the valve during an impact on land or water.

NEW: CARBON LOAD TRANSFER TIP CARBON BATTEN = QUICKER RESPONSE The wider, angled wing tips of the Black Tip and Co2 kites are a key element to the kite's high performance handling characteristics. This wing tip design would not be complete without a lightweight stiff carbon batten support. The Carbon Load Transfer Tip provides immediate reaction to the rider's input by transferring the load from control line to kite instantly while reducing wingtip distortion. The carbon wingtip also allows for multiple hang point positions. The carbon rod is removable for the easy folding and transport of the kite.

NEW: MULTIPLE HANG POINTS The carbon supported angled wing tips of the Black Tip and Co2 have increased the kite's turning speed dramatically compared to the 2001 models. In fact the turning response is so great that we have added a second hang point for the steering (back) lines. This allows the rider to choose their turning speed according to their riding preference. The back hang point is the fastest position and the front hang point is the slower connection. Hanging from the front connection will de-sensitize the kite and make it turn slightly slower. This is especially useful in the smaller kites where the kites tend to be quick turning or for practicing tricks where the kite needs to be stable in flight.

NEW: TWO OR FOUR LINE COMPATABILITY The Black Tip and C02 can both be flown as either a two or four line kite. The C02 ships with a two line bridle attached and needs to be converted to a four line system. We recommend using the Powerdrive conversion kit to change the C02 over to four lines. Conversely the Black Tip ships as a four line kite and needs to be converted to two lines by purchasing the optional two line bridle. The Black Tip can only be flown as a two line kite in the 7.2 - 5.0 sizes. Both models have wing tips that are ready to accept either two or four line systems. No rolling of the tip is required

NEW: L.E. THREADLINE ORIENTATION LEADING EDGE STABILITY In the 2002 performance kites (Black Tip and Co2) we have doubled the amount of sections that make up the leading edge strut. By doing this we can control the stretch and stress forces on the LE by orienting the threadline to accurately follow the loadline. In other words, in each section, the orientation of the threadline is positioned to take maximum advantage of the strength of the material. This creates a more stable, and rigid leading edge, which in turn translates into better performance in flight and while water launching.

Specific Improvements to the Black Tip 9.4
- Cabrinha have improved the quality of the velcro on the opening of the Leading Edge strut.
- The L.E. velcro position was relocated away from the load along the top edge as well as the opening reduced in size to improve strength.
- The trailing edge reinforcement (where batten struts meet the trailing edge) is now two sided.
- Wing tip batten stiffness and strength has been improved.
- Molded batten end caps have been added to the wing tip battens.
- Reverse launch bridle attachment loops have been added for rider experimentation and reverse launch bridle options.

Specific Improvements to the Black Tip 12.2
- Cabrinha have improved the quality of the velcro on the opening of the Leading Edge strut.
- The L.E. velcro position was relocated away from the load along the top edge as well as the opening reduced in size to improve strength.
- The trailing edge reinforcement (where batten struts meet the trailing edge) is now two sided.
- Wing tip width increased resulting in improved turning speed.
- Wing tip angle increased resulting in improved turning speed.
- Tube batten used in wing tip to improve stability and increase sensitivity.
- Trailing Edge hollow added between battens 2 and 3 to eliminate leech flutter.
- Molded batten end caps have been added to the wing tip battens.
- Reverse launch bridle attachment loops have been added for rider experimentation and reverse launch bridle options.

Specific Improvements to the Co2 7.0
- Cabrinha have improved the quality of the velcro on the opening of the Leading Edge strut.
- The L.E. velcro position was relocated away from the load along the top edge as well as the opening reduced in size to improve strength.
- The trailing edge reinforcement (where batten struts meet the trailing edge) is now two sided.
- Wing tip batten stiffness and strength has been improved.
- Trailing Edge hollow added between battens 2 and 3 to eliminate leech flutter.
- Molded batten end caps have been added to the wing tip battens.
- Cabrinha have fine-tuned the size of the original sample which was slightly oversized. The production kite is now a true 7.0 sqm.
- The aspect ratio (span ratio) has been slightly reduced to 4.0.

***All 2002 kites will be supplied with a CD and Quick Start booklet

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE BLACK TIP AND THE CO2?
In 2002 the two performance kites; the Black Tip and the Co2, while similar in their construction, are vastly separated by their differences in aspect ratio (refer to chart). The differences in aspect ratio have much to do with how they perform in the air and on the water. The higher aspect Black Tip kite with its high lifting abilities, is the pros choice for huge air, high hangtimes, and big trick maneuvers. The Black Tip will be sensitive to every gust that enters the kite and is therefore considered an expert level kite. The lower (more moderate) aspect ratio Co2 will offerstability and a constant steady pull. This performance kite sits lower in the power window making it an excellent kite for wave riding or for wakeboard style tricks. Its boosting power is only outdone by its stability in flight. The reduction in aspect ratio makes this kite incredibly user friendly to water relaunch.

BLACK TIP The 2002 Cabrinha Black Tip preserves the same design characteristics that made it the 2001 World Champion Freestyle and Hangtime winner in both Mens and Womens. Its high aspect, high lift attributes combined with our new battened wing tip design produce a responsive, but stable kite perfect for huge aerial tricks and lofty distance jumps. The angled battened wing tips enhance rider input by taking out the "play" associated with an unsupported tip design. The battened wing tip also allows for multiple hang points from which you can connect your back flying lines. This option allows the rider to choose the turning speed of the kite to suit their flying preference. The 7.2, 6.0, and 5.0 Black Tip can be flown as a two line performance kite by attaching a simple two line bridle. New leading edge strut and batten materials increase the rigidity of the frame, stabilizing the kite in flight and enhancing its durability. Details such as our new molded seam protectors, high grade TPU bladder material, and high volume AirLock leading edge valve help to make the Black Tip an entirely new kite from top to bottom.

CO2 The 2002 C02 is all performance. Its constant, steady pull and cruise control handling gives wakeboarders second thoughts about ever riding behind a boat again. With the addition of the Cabrinha C111 school kite, the CO2 no longer has to straddle the fence between beginner kite and pro wakeboard kite. The new CO2 is the lower aspect brother to the Black Tip, using much of the same durable materials and construction. The two kites are now mainly separated by differences in aspect ratio which position the CO2 as the favored kite for boosting technical tricks when rigged as a two line kite, or as a down the line wave riding kite when rigged as a two or four line kite.

C111 D.A.R.T. Low Aspect, Stable School Kite Everything put into the design of the C111 school kite is for the purpose of getting the first time rider up and riding as quickly and as safely as possible. Stability, durability, and simplicity are the three ingredients that define this kite. The simple 2 line (convertible to 4) school kite is a low aspect, rock solid wing on the water or on land. The aspect ratios (lower than the Co2) together with its rigid frame make water relaunching a snap. The C111's durable materials and construction will allow the inevitable beating that a beginner will surely dish out.

CONTROL BARS

At the heart of the entire Cabrinha Control System lies the Ergonomic Control Bar. Its original shape is designed to place your hands in the most comfortable riding position and to enhance steering by creating leverage with its curved end fittings. The raised line connectors keep the flying lines away from the rider adding an element of safety. The 22mm diameter bar together with the smooth textured "C" grip provide the rider hours of riding comfort by eliminating the forearm fatigue normally associated with larger diameter bars. The same plastic end fittings serve as line winders. The ECS comes standard with our Spin Loop harness line featuring a stainless steel swivel.

The 2002 Ergonomic Control Bar features:
- Ergonomic hand friendly design
- Contoured molded end fittings
- Line winders
- Soft textured "C" grip
- Line floats
- Quick release wrist leash
- Stainless steel swivel harness "spin loop"

The Powerdrive Control System is a combination of a joystick and instrument panel, which offers the rider precision kite control and is compatible with any 4 line inflatable strut kite. The multifunction Powerdrive Control System starts with an Ergonomic Control Bar and adds our non-slipping Powerdrive centerline fitting. The durable plastic fitting is smaller and lower profile than the original and comes attached directly to the bar without a shim. The floating Powerdrive Control System allows the rider to control the power of a kite by hooking into the Powerloop, and to change the angle of attack by sheeting the control bar in or out. This action tames even the gustiest of wind conditions and allows for the kite to be depowered by roughly one kite size.

The 2002 Powerdrive Control Bar features:
- Ergonomic hand friendly design
- Contoured molded end fittings
- Line winders
- Soft textured "C" grip
- Line floats
- Quick release wrist leash
- Standard fixed harness line
- Depower loop
- Centerline adjustment strap

NEW FOR 2002 - Shorter, non-sticking centerline adjustment strap, Line Floats, Smaller depower loop (additional sizes), Smooth velcro release on wrist leash cuff and a Non Slipping molded centerline depower fitting.

BOARDS

The Surface to Air brings freestyle trick riding into the directional arena. Freestyle tricks with directionals have evolved to the point that even some of the hardest core wakeboarders will have a directional in their quiver. The Surface to Air, with its low volume and Step Rail™ design is as comfortable edging along at high speed as it is flying through the air. Its quad fin design lets the rider use the fins to load up the rail for jumps or to help control board speed by "checking" the rail. The balance of the Surface to Air makes rotating through any type of trick or spin a piece of cake.
WHAT IS A STEP RAIL?
The Step Rail concept is a Cabrinha original which made its debut on the Surface to Air models. The step rail shape is a unique way of allowing the necessary volume or thickness of a board while having the optimum thin rail for edging. In other words it is the perfect combination of buoyancy and edge control.

The Auto Pilot's surf style outline and multiple fin configuration options make it the most versatile board in the range. The popularity of the Auto Pilot among beginners has lead to its continuation in 2002. The Auto Pilot's 5 fin design is the backbone of its legendary ease of use. The five fins create a stable platform and offer effortless bite, which translates into incredible upwind ability even in patchy wind conditions. The PVC sandwich constructed design of the Auto Pilot will keep up with you as your riding style progresses from beginner to intermediate. All boards come complete with footstraps, footpads, a screwdriver and a leash to get you up and riding immediately.

The Prankster 150 and 172 takes kiteboarding to a user-friendly performance level. The Prankster design is inspired by the Spoiler wakeboard in terms of outline and fin configuration. But the Prankster also utilizes the proven Step Rail Technology from the successful Surface to Air model to achieve the best of both worlds in the volume versus edge control battle. This board shines in its ease of use as the twin tip design promotes the "no jibe" policy of kiteboarding. It can be ridden with footstraps or wake sandals for easy water access or high wrap bindings for full wakeboard style commitment.
The Prankster is constructed with an EPS core and composite materials in a compression mold for strength and durability. The Prankster twin tip is an intermediate to expert board and is also a perfect transition board for someone who wants to progress into wakeboarding but wants to stay with a higher volume board.

The Spoiler 140 and 150 define the new direction in kite wakeboards. Rider requirements and the evolution in kite designs have caused a shift away from cut away tips in favor of fuller tipped wakeboards for added "pop" in freestyle and big air maneuvers. The Spoiler 140 and 150 are the first single wing full tip kiteboards on the market offering this design. The Spoiler boasts four fins (two on each end) and a tip channel for maximum bite and control.
The Spoiler is constructed with a PU core, carbon, and Cabrinha AluTech™ glass in a compression mold for optimum flex and durability.
The Cabrinha Spoiler is a pro model kiteboard. The low volume, and small fin configuration normally associated with wakeboard design lends itself to the intermediate to expert level rider.

BINDINGS

Axis Pro
The Axis Pro wakeboard binding defines comfort. It is constructed with EVA toe and heel inlays and a rubber front lace overlay. The front lace provides the ability to conform the binding to the shape of your foot and to choose the level of fit that you desire. The ratchet ankle strap delivers added ankle support and heel hold with its incremental ratchet adjustment. Details like our thick EVA footpad with arch support and our contoured heel shaped rear cup provide an unprecedented level of support for hours of comfort while riding. Releasing the front lace system allows the toe inlay to open wide to provide an easy entry or exit from the binding. This is especially important when self launching or landing your kiteboard. When mounted with the included stiffy plates, the solid connection to the board creates a direct transfer of energy to the rail for immediate and powerful results.

Wake Sandal
The Cabrinha Wake Sandal is a user friendly binding that is perfect for the twin tip or wakeboard rider. The Wake Sandal provides an easy entry and exit with the added support and comfort of an adjustable heel strap. The molded foot pad delivers a soft ride and protects from heel impact when landing huge jumps. The Sandal is constructed with durable rubber and mounted on a fully adjustable aluminum plate. The Cabrinha Wake Sandal is ideal for a rider who wants the ease of entry of a footstrap but wants the added support and security of a heel strap.

Freestyle Plate

The new twin tip, motocross style of riding inspired this binding. The Cabrinha Freestyle plate allows a standard footstrap to be used on any board with wakeboard inserts. The plate features a comfortable grip with a heel wedge for a solid board connection, yet you can still remove your foot (or feet) when performing the latest trick.

Footstrap
Comfortable, supportive, durable and adjustable, the Cabrinha Foot Strap is constructed of Neoprene and Nylon, ideal for the Auto Pilot and Surface to Air directional.

BOARD BAGS

HARNESSES

When it comes to riding for hours on end, the last thing you want is to have your harness tell you when it's time to come in. The Cabrinha line of harnesses are designed to provide the maximum level of comfort and support while working invisibly in the background. Both the Cabrinha Waist and Seat harnesses were built to address the unique loading and forces of kitesurfing through body shaping and soft neoprene and nylon materials. The double buckle hook attachment contains the hook a low position and transfers the load across the entire back of the harness. Its unique handle is placed in the center of the harness for rider assistance on the water or on the beach.

THE SA PRO-AM KITEBOARDING CIRCUIT 2001-2002

This circuit has been running throughout South Africa with the sole purpose of growing the sport, as well as enhancing the already fantastic spectator value that goes with it. The focus of this tour has been equally split between the pro divisions and the amateur/fun segment, allowing riders from all levels to compete. The first 7 legs of this circuit have come and gone with Cabrinha offering the best prizes to date! Results available at http://www.kiteass.com/

THE HUNTERS KITEBOARDING CONTEST hosted by CABRINHA KITES 5-6 JANUARY 2002

The 5th leg of the SA Pro-Am Circuit had an large number of entries with everyone rearing to go for the RECORD cash prizes totalling R15 000.00. But not a breath of wind on either day meant the boys went home hungry for the next contest… though not thirsty! Hunters Dry did a lot to ease the tension by sponsoring icy beverages throughout the weekend. Our thanks to Hunters Dry, as well as to our team of helpers and judges who stood by patiently the entire weekend. On a lighter note, here's what James and the Giant Peaches thought of the no-wind conditions!

THE DURBAN BOARDSAILING/JOLUKA KITEBOARD CONTEST 8-10 FEBRUARY 2002

The 6th leg of the SA Pro-Am Circuit had a good turn-out of competitors and spectators, but alas, the guest of honour refused to blow. The main event was abandoned due to no wind! It seemed that everyone managed to have a great time anyway and eventually one event was held and relegated to a fun status. The 5km "Downwind Dash" was held in a 7-knot wind and the results were:

Cabrinha Kites Announces 2002 International Team

MAUI, HAWAII- January 2002 - CABRINHA moves into its second year in the kiteboarding industry with a solid and talented team of International Riders. Making up the CABRINHA 2002 International Team are returning World Champions, Martin Vari (ARG) and Julie Prochaska (USA). Also returning are Elliot Leboe (USA), Marc Ramseier (SUI), and up and coming youth, Stav Niarchos. New to the CABRINHA 2002 International Team is Dimitri Maramenides (USA).

Martin Vari (ARG) - In his first year of international competition, nineteen year old Martin Vari surprised everyone with his huge airs and technical maneuvers. Riding stock production Black Tip kites and a Spoiler wakeboard prototype with AxisPro bindings, Martin proved himself a force in the season of competition and claimed the Freestyle World Champion title. Since finishing the 2001 World Tour Martin has spent his days training on the island of O'ahu, HI where he is a student at Hawaii Pacific University. In 2002 Martin will once again demonstrate his ability to be versatile and innovative as he changes riding styles and takes kiting to new heights on the Cabrinha Prankster Twintip.

Julie Prochaska (USA) - 2001 was an incredible year for Julie Prochaska, not only was she named "Best Female Kitesurfer" at the NEA Awards in Munich, Germany, she also dominated the World Tour with her aggressive wakeboard style to win both the Freestyle and Hang Time World Champion titles. Riding a Cabrinha Spoiler wakeboard and using "off the shelf" production Black Tip kites Julie demonstrated time and again that she is the number one female rider on the tour. Her huge grabs, inverted moves, and major hang times (she holds the women's hang time world record at 5.5 seconds) easily set her apart from the rest of the women on the tour, as well as most of the men. 2002 promises to be another big year for Julie as she takes on yet another title, that of Mrs. Chris Gilbert. The couple plans to wed in the fall of 2002.

Elliot Leboe (USA) - The 2001 touring season came to an abrupt halt for Elliot Leboe when he tore the ACL on his left knee landing a jump at the Maxibon competition in Leucate, France. The badly damaged knee required surgery and cost Elliot the rest of the 2001 competitive season. Despite the set back Elliot pushed forward undergoing intense physical therapy to rebuild and strengthen his knee. It was during this downtime from kiting that Elliot developed a minor obsession for videography, spending much of his day on the point at Kite Beach, Maui videotaping the latest, greatest maneuvers his buddies were pulling off. In the fall of 2001 Elliot returned to the water and launched himself completely back into the kiteboarding way of life. Elliot's plans for 2002 include several travel stories on kiteboarding throughout Europe and Mexico. Expect to see a bit less of Elliot on the competitive scene this year and a bit more of him on the road promoting Cabrinha through kiteboarding clinics, photo shoots, and videos, like Don Hannah's upcoming "Flow".

Marc Ramseier (SUI) - Also recovering from a knee injury sustained during the 2001 competitive season is Marc "Marley" Ramseier who returns to the Cabrinha International Team for the second year in a row. Marc finished the 2001 World Tour in 19th place and wrapped up the year with an eighth place finish at the Red Bull Airlords Contest in New Zealand. Marc has yet to set his travel schedule for 2002 but will make Maui his training ground for the bulk of new year.

Stav Niarchos (USA) - Little is known about Cabrinha's young gun, Stav, other than he's one to keep your eye on in 2002. Stav can be spotted in various secret spots in France and Switzerland, as well as several times a year on Maui. He prefers to ride the Cabrinha Spoiler wakeboard with AxisPro bindings and fly Cabrinha CO2 kites. Look for a sequence shot of Stav in the next issue of Kite Boarding Magazine (US).

Dimitri Maramenides (USA) - The newest member to join the Cabrinha International Team, Dimitri Maramenides, hails originally from Athens, Greece but now makes his home in North Carolina's Outer Banks. Dimitri will be competing in various events around the US before heading out on the pro tour this spring.

Pete Cabrinha (USA) - Heading up the Cabrinha international team is versatile waterman, Pete Cabrinha. Pete's background as a pioneer of windsurfing, strap surfing / tow-surfing and kitesurfing has provided the inspiration for the successful launch of Cabrinha kiteboarding in 2001. In 2002 you will find Pete circling the globe as he continually tests out the latest Cabrinha gear and discovers some uncharted new kiting locations. Through his travels Pete plans to showcase kiteboarding's wide range of appeal in an adventurous, non-competitive light. Enthusiastic about the company's second year in the industry, Pete will continue to define the lifestyle and culture of kiteboarding with the creative efforts of his talented design teams as well Cabrinha's international rider program.
